Using pin 3, I get nothing back from my new homemade tool, no flashes after the momentary contact, although I do have a CEL.

Using pin 6, the tool does seem to work, flashing out an error 325 from the ECC. So I know the tool is wired correctly.

Any ideas? The car is a 1996 Volvo 850 wagon, no turbo.

Thx!!

dbooth914,

Since you have 1996 850 no turbo, I'd guess you do not have Motronic 4.3, but instead have a Motronic 4.4.

The flashing tool on pin 3 is for use with Motronic 4.3 (and maybe for some other non-Motronic 4.4 ECMs).

A USA-destined Motronic 4.4 can have its codes (that cause the CEL light) read in two basic ways:

1. via standard OBDII emission diagnostics (like would be used by a standard, cheap, run-of-the-mill OBDII scanner, ELM327 device, etc), or

2. via the KWPD3B0 protocol that the '96-'97 850 COMBI, SRS, ABS, AW 50-42, Power Seats, Motronic 4.4, etc use (and which Vol-FCR uses, volvo850diag can use, ELM327 device can use if it has first been setup properly for KWPD3B0 access, etc).

Solution 1 is adequate to debug most Motronic 4.4 caused CEL situations.

Solution 2 can sometimes provide a little better view of specifically what is happening, since the Motronic 4.4 (acting as ECU 7A) might report multiple, distinct DTCs, when the OBDII emission diagnostics based Solution 1 might only report a single DTC (or two DTCs which are identical).

Unless you hear otherwise from some Motronic 4.4 owner, you should assume the flashing LED tool is not for use with a Motronic 4.4. I personally would advise against using a flashing LED tool on pin 7 of any of the ECUs that Vol-FCR handles. I think you would be asking for trouble.

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I misunderstood which Motronic I had.

I have the ELM327 BT and can use it to get the basic engine DTCs (current CEL is a P0455 which I'm working on).

What I was hoping was to get some info back from the electronic climate control ecu, as my ac just quit yesterday. When the pin 3 connection did not work, I figured the 3-2-5 from pin 6 may have been a red herring?

I have the volvo850.diag working with the BT ELM327 device, but I cannot understand the output, even with the help of the interpreter. It also looks like that tool does not read from the ECC ecu? I need to spend more time learning the tool, as it looks like a great resource.

Electrical stuff has always been my weak point. Is this really as simple as it appears? If I am reading the diagram correctly, I could take a simple test light and connect it between connections 3 and 16. Then put a simple on/off switch from connection 5 to the test light? Is it really that simple? My current car is an 96 Turbo. I’m trying to diagnose a Electronic Climate Control issue (the dreaded blinking lights).

On a 96 850 Turbo, these flashing LED tools are used with Motronic 4.3 on pin 3, ECC on pin 6, and Cruise Control on pin 13.

So if you are going to diagnose an ECC problem, the light goes between pins 6 and 16 (not pins 3 and 16 as you mentioned in your question).

For your test light, I suggest a 12V Red LED with in-built 680 ohm resistor.

Here's a list of flashing LED tool alternatives (including Ben850's).

So I'm trying to read my abs fault code, but at my odb connecter there is no wire under #12. Only 1,3,4,5,6,7,13 and 16 have wires under them. Any chance for me to read abs fault codes?

My notes indicate pin 12 was used for ABS on the 900 and S90/V90.
So don't be surprised if you don't have it on your 850.

I have no experience with using a flashing LED tool on pin #12.

I think that it is *not* possible for you to read your '95 850 ABS with an OBD I style LED flash code reader through the OBDII port (like this thread is focused on) simply because your OBDII port has no pin 12.

Do you have the OBDI box under the hood/bonnet near where the ECM box is in the right front of the engine area? If yes, that would be the quickest way to read your ABS codes initially?
