I could not find a troubleshoot on this model in the forum, so I thought I post this (the 96 model is slight different from the pre-95)
PROBLEM:
Cruise Control would disengage occasionally, and then refuse to reengage.
DIAGNOSIS:
Checked the brake switch (pulling up the brake pedal while driving) - switch was good
Checked all the vacuum lines - looked good
Checked the fuses - all good
Only thing left now is the Cruise Control Relay:
I read in forums it is behind the ashtray, to remove the ashtray and so on, but that is only up to the 1995 Model.
NOTE:
On the 1996 Model you have to remove the Radio (not the ashtray) and you will see the Relay, it is the only orange one. I removed the radio (made sure I have the anti theft CODE first) and drove around with the CC on, then tapped on the Relay, what sure enough caused the CC to disengage.
I then ordered a used CC Relay from ebay ($6.00) and installed it. Works fine ever since.
Just thought I post this in case someone else has the same issue on a 1996 - 960

PS:
If anyone has a 960 dome light for $10 please PM me, thanks

Thanks for the post. Glad you got it working. One last place to check if the problem returns. The CC module under the hood is the Big black round thing to the right by throttle body. The Big black round thing is a rubberized diaphragm. My mechanic told me they can tear and leak.
As for the dome light... Good luck with that! One of the parts companies has em in grey. they require a vin to sell it. The plastic clips broke on mine, and they will not stay up there. I am trying to figure a way to engineer a new clip system to keep it up there. We will have our hands full with all the plastic clips in these cars I'm afraid.

Hi,
I have a 1995 960, and with this thread I just figured where the cruise control relay is. the cruise control did never worked. I have already checked all the switches (brake, clutch (yes, it's a manual!!) and controls) and they're fine. will check the cruise relay...
