need help with whirring noise

Post by dk_S70volvo »

My mechanic cannot figure this out. For the past month or so there has been an alternating whirring/squealing noise coming from the engine when the car accelerates and decelerates. The squealing noise is more prevalent when it gets cold out, but the whirring noise shows up consistently. I have a 2000 S70 AWD sedan with 125K miles. Could this an issue with the timing belt (which I haven't had replaced yet?) Any suggestions?

My guess would be the timing belt's idler pulley.
