1999xc 130k - here is the story - car had a binding or dull popping sound when making tight turns. Forward or reverse. Dropped angle gear - like pudding inside - cleaned it - ring and pinion looked fine - resealed it and re-installed, Splined coupler looked dirty and has some light rust, cleaned it looked perfect. Installed new one anyway. Installed new driveshaft from Colorado DS, center bearing all the stuff. Went through 2 used VC's from Erie Volvo, finally ordered a new VC from Volvo. All new motor mounts, axles are fine, rear end is fine. After $ALL of this I am back to the same spot where I started - the car pops oh tight turns , pops/binding increasing with frequency as the turn tightens. On the freeway and touring the car is like it is on rails - smooth as silk. (volvo silk not lexus silk)
WTF? Have these cars always bound a bit when turning? Can anyone go out and do some tight turns in their gen 1 and report back too me?

Watch your inside rear wheel on tight turns, perhaps the diff is the problem. The inside wheel may be trying to turn the same speed as the outside wheel. Watching ours on a slippery surface (snow, ice) you can see the inside wheel slip as the car moves while turning tight, just like driving with a welded diff!
On dry pavement the car will come to a stop if you put it in neutral while rolling ahead and then turn tight!
I don't know if this is normal with these cars, or if there is a problem with our diff. It sure makes for good going in deep snow though- until you want to turn!

'00 XC70 SE 240,000mi. - a real car
so you have the popping/binding - has the car always done this? I dropped the whole rear assembly - opened it up - nothing strange - I did notice that when on the lift, the rear wheels would only rotate maybe 3/4 turn - that seemed kind of strange - theses cars dont have a rear locker anyway.
