Are you sure it is not a coolant smell rather than exhaust? The 10 minutes is kind of strange also. Perhaps the olfactory has been desensitized by then?

pretty sure its not coolant, thats more of a sweet chocolate smell unless i'm mistaken.

the odour is more similar to exhaust right off the muffler

and yeah perhaps the olfactory does get desensitized after 10 mins...

could this have anything to do with the PCV system?

Open the hood and make sure snow/ice have not covered the intake below the center of the windshield. Then check the rubber seal that the hood rests on, it could me messed up and allowing engine air inside. If there is a turbo leak on the exhaust, it will smoke until the exhaust gets hot enough and it all burns up.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.

If it is the Hood Seal why the smell with only the Heater on

Check for smoke from the Dipstick Tube also. See if it is smoking (PCV System).

I had a similar issue with a 99 V70 turbo. The cabin filter was replaced, but the smell did not go away. It turned out the front exhaust pipe had a small leak at the turbo, and the smell was most noticeable when stopped b/c fumes would rise through the engine compartment and into cabin filter vent. I believe it required replacing the gasket at that junction.
