1996 850 gl lifter/ valve noise

Post by donovan »

Hi
I recently started getting really bad noise from the valve area of the engine.
Posted a video on youtube..

Through reading through the forum. I take it, is the lifters. I gather they open the valves.
Is there a tutorial on how to replace them, how exactly do they work and how do you tell which lifter has gone bad. What parts would I need to buy?
THx

Lifter tick on these cars is usually caused by bad o-rings down in the oil pan, where the oil pickup tube is. The top end isn't getting enough oil, hence the noise. First step is to drop the pan and replace all of the o-rings, there are only 3 or 4 of them to replace on a non-turbo like yours.

A problem with the hydraulic lifters is possible, but that is rare. I would start with the o-rings. It is kind of a lousy job due to the difficulty of getting the oil pan off then resealed properly, but the parts are cheap ... Only use Volvo branded o-rings, you can get a kit.

This one is awesome but it is for an AWD car so not exactly the same as yours:

And this one is good, your car will be the same, but a lot of the pics are no longer up:

Thanks Erik. How should I tackle the problem. Tackle oil o-rings before thinking of replacing the lifter.
Does replacing the O-rings normally restore oil pressure and therefore lubricate the lfter again?

Replacing the o-rings usually gets rid of the lifter tick, I would do that first then see how it runs.

I have not heard of bad lifters on these cars, although it has probably happened.
