07 S60 2.5T. Thermostat assembly replacement

I just tried to replace my thermostat assembly. I got as far as draining the coolant, removing the timing belt cover, and trying to access the bolts (screws) on the assembly. Everything I've read including the Haynes/chilton's book requires the removal of the aux belt, and the power steering pump. Anybody done this without these steps, ie with a special tool? I've read something regarding a special Ion torx bit or a u joint that might do the job. Thanks in advance.

I did this job a few months ago and I did take the belt and pump off, it was super easy to do! You just need a big sized torx to loosen the tensioner(not sure from memory which size)
