98 V70R Turbo rebuild kit from ebay = disaster

I just wanted to share my experience with a cheap rebuild kit for the TD04HL that I purchased from ebay. It had the correct number of parts, but the quality of the parts was abysmal. I could not use over 50% of the parts. Bearings/bushes didn't fit the shaft, the o rings were over size, cir clips too thick to engage the groove, poor oil rings (too thick). Quite useless actually . The worst part was once it was all assembled, tightening the compressor wheel nut to more than hand tight locked the whole assembly completely. Reassemble with the old parts and it spun like a top.
Anyway, lesson learned. Buy cheap, but twice. Stay away from the cheap and often nasty junk. Car in drive way waiting for an urgent fix.

Mitsubishi part number 49189-84000 will fix you right up but the eBay sellers can be deceptive. They will list the part number but it won't be genuine Mitsubishi. Unless it clearly says Mitsubishi on the box then chances are it is aftermarket.

I bought one through an eBay seller but I had to read the fine print to make sure it was the real thing. Another good source is places that repair diesel trucks. They may not stock it but most of them have ready access to Mitsubishi parts.

Thanks guys. Much appreciated. I love being a cautionary tale. "Remember that V70R guy from down under…?" Don't be him. (BTW it's over 40*C here today or 100+ in US terms = summer)

The kit was NOT a Mitsubishi kit, nor was it trying to be. I do strongly advise everyone to not try and save a few bucks in critical tolerance areas. Had I got the proper Mitsubishi kit, I would be laughing, with a working turbo, no doubt. The proper kits are available on eBay for a fair bit more than I paid, but… the cheap ones will most likely end in pain.

On the other hand, if a kit is sold as a repair kit for a TD04, it should be able to do so. The parts in this kit were waaaaaaaaaaaaay out of spec. Visually, it was ok, but get the measuring stick/caliper on to it and it was NEVER fit for purpose.

So, eBay seller "Powerplusaus" (who is in Taiwan and has a US based cousin it seems), here's to your pathetic business practices. I hope a thrust bearing gets inserted deep into your turbine housing.

Enough. I will be sorted in a few days and back enjoying the stinking hot weather.
