1996 850 interference

Is the Volvo 5 cylinder engine an "interference" engine, meaning that the valves and pistons will collide if the timing belt breaks? Thanks!

20v (B5254 & B5204) are interference ...but i heard that 10 valves engines are not.
'97 850 2.5 20v / fully equipped / Motronic 4.4 from the factory / upgraded with S,V,C,XC70 instrument cluster / polar white wagon

That is correct. The 4-Cylinder, 8 valve and the 5-cylinder, 10 valve are non-interference.

To the original poster: the US spec cars are 20 valve. All of those 5 cylinders are interference engines.

I've worked on the 10 valve (B5252S) 5 cylinder engines and they're interference motors; flycuts on pistons means that's the case.

My 850 which engine code of B5252S /401856 stamped on the block has a 10 valves on it, is it possible to upgrade into 20 valves (B5254S) cylinder head and upgrade also the Piston heads for 20 valves?

Nope...engine management is totally different.

it is also not possible to swap a turbo-motor into a non-turbo-body. on p80 Volvos what you get is what you've got, no easy way to change that.
