2006 S40: Engine Swap

Post by jtree5757 »

Hey, Does anyone know if the engine has to be dropped from the bottom or if I can hoist it up?

Also, are there any good references for this type of project on this car? Want to make sure I do everything right!

Thanks!

If you have a lift or have access to one, you're in better shape than most. If not, most engines can be pulled from the top if you remove the hood. Then again, I've never pulled the motor out of a Volvo. Just domestics.... I've always pulled from the top after removing the hood. Good question for those of us who DIY and don't have easy access to a lift.

Thanks for the response. Definitely don't have access to a lift unfortunately. I've never removed a hood but it can't be that hard right?

I've heard of cars having a service setting in the good so it basically gets out of the way when doing things like this. I wonder if this car has it?

It's not too hard. It's easier with a friend to help. I've always just removed the hood. Then, it's out of the way and can't get dented or scratched if the engine hoist slips or swings for some reason.

The motors on 850s, later P80 series S70s and V70s, P2 series S60s and V70s can all be pulled from the top.

Once you've disconnected and loosened everything just hire a hoist. A Haynes manual or Vida may help.
