2002 V70 driver side axle removal?

Some people remove the other side (passenger) and poke a long round bar through to persuade the driver's side to come out.
The "official" method is turn then pull, turn then pull until it gives.

The US driver side requires placing a wedge such as a large screwdriver/pry-bar or likes with dull edge between axle inner cv joint and the gearbox, and then a 5LB hammer whack at the wedge. It would release the c-clip over the axle, you will notice an immediate gap of 1/4".

I collar the metal wedge like chisel with 1/32" bicycle repair rubber... with little lube it will slide easy and prevent any bruise to the surfaces.

Carter - I replaced mine last year and I too found that despite all the web claims of turn and pull or wedge until it pops, mine was really stuck. I went to what I considered to be extremes before I gave up and took it to my trusted mechanic. It turned out the splines were rusted together. My S60 was missing the underpinning when I bought it at 4 yrs old. I think w/out the underpinning, road water splashed up on the exposed trasmission entry point and caused the corrossion.

I am preparing to replace both front axles with OE/rebuild.
What were your steps to removing that failed dmcgrana?
What were your extremes?

The method of turn an pull has one VERY important part left out. You turn it and push it in and then pry again with reasonable force. You are trying to get the circlip to go back centered where the edge of circlip is within the gear's beveled area adjacent to splines.
If you don't push in then it has no opportunity to fall in place.
If you forcefully remove the shaft and it breaks the circlip you stand a great chance of that going out of the diff case and be unreachable with a magnet to retrieve it.
