2003 S60 Shift Cable

I just installed a used motor in my S60 the job went okay, just a few hiccups which JDS60R (hat tip) helped me through. Now I have a new problem. I backed the car out of the garage and it won't shift into drive. P, N, and R is all I have. If can physically go under the hood and move the linkage on the transmission and it will go in and drive (please no safety lectures, it was done in a safe manor). I removed the cable and bracket from the transmission when the motor was removed and reinstalled when the motor went in. It was in perfect working condition before I started the change over.

Does anyone have any insight on how to adjust or rectify this problem? Cable Adjustment?

The bracket locating the cable to the gearbox is slotted. Did you mark the exact location of the bolts to the bracket?
Also do you have reverse lights when in R?

If not just place ignition to posII and gear lever in R and find the most central position on the bracket where the lights come on. You'll need a mirror located at the rear of the car or best done in low light if you have a rear garage wall.

No I did not notice the bracket being slotted. I will check it out and let you know how I make out.

This may help if yours isn't slotted. By GENTLY removing the yellow plastic from the top you now have cable length adjustment.

Okay guys, I figured it out. Toward the transmission end of the cable, there is a spring and an orange tab. The spring has a plastic collar. To adjust the cable you pull the platic collar toward the front of the car, compressing the spring, when the spring is fully compressed, stick your finger under the orange plastic tab and pop it up. This will allow the cable to slide in the fitting, I used two people to do adjust the cable, me under the hood and another person with their foot on the brake shifting the car. When the cable is in the right spot you will have park to drive. At this point, push down on the orange tab and make sure the collar with the spring slides partially over the orange tab locking it into place. This took me about 10 minutes.
