Hey everyone my daughter picked up a clean 1999 v70 non turbo loaded with cold weather package and 150k miles for $1800. Fixed the rear hatch panel and cleaned the window switches already.
Well you know these cars as I went through everything on our 1998 s70 glt heater core motor mounts a arms window switch contacts etc...
I detailed the engine in her car as it was filthy (and the timing belt was actually done at 110k!). Afterwards guess waft popped up... Ets, dang! Cleared code, no light, second start ets p1028. Sob! Car runs perfect! So after a day I thought ok wd40 is good to dissipate any moisture so I soaked it down. Went to start it, long long crank then started died, tried again fired up fine ran fine no light (as I cleared it).
Drove it ran fine no light. Turned off went to move it later bam ets p1028. Any ideas for repair? Can I pull it off and clean it? I fixed my abs module myself, I'm not afraid of these devices.
Thanks in advance for any help.
New 1999 v70 in the family time to start over!

Sounds like a nice find. My experience with my 99 V70 ETM was that the cleaning did not do any good.
I went with XeMODeX and no issues in three years. I would go that route again.
Good luck.

I would first clean this connector. You may have washed in debris. If this does not clear the code follow the write up on how to clean the throttle body. it would not hurt to attempt a cleaning before you shelled out bucks for the XeMODeX. We did have to use this Mod and it solved all our problems. Great product.

This is really just some rambling thoughts. The XeMODeX thing has been a popular fix for this issue for a long time now. Is there a sure-fire eyeball way to id if this part is in a given junk yard vehicle? Could be bought for essential chicken-feed I would think.

being down this salvage road before I am not aware of any sure fire way to evaluate if a salvaged TB works. It is a gamble. You can increase your odds if you find a TB with a yellow label. The factory installed TB have a white label. A yellow tagged TB means the donor car has had it's TB replaced at some point in time at a service center.

So no sure way to tell if it is an XeMODeX replacement unit? Or is XeMODeX all just internal parts being replaced? I'm not familiar with the device as I drive only 98's but one never knows if a good looking 99 or 00 might appear.

Please don't delude yourself.
EVERY SINGLE 1999, 2000 and 2001 needs an ETM replacement at least one time, maybe more in it's lifetime
Fact of Volvo life, the throttle was/is a poor design

Go ahead and pull the module off and clean out the TB throat, it needs it anyway. Clean the electrical plug with electric cleaner, NOT WD40. When putting it back together, make sure the plug is fastened securely.
A junk yard version with a yellow tag may require programming at the dealer to work.
