1996 850 Turbo, wont start but has fuel and spark

Post by idigvolvos »

Hi!

My car has had a rough idle for the last year, but really only noticed it when stopped at lights. The I went to start it after work (didn't notice anything strange on the drive to work) and it started and then promptly died. Tried a few more times and it would crank but not start. Checked the following:
-Cam is turning
-fuel is squirting out of fuel line under a good amount of pressure (going to check actual pressure today)
-rotor is turning
-verified spark at coil and spark plugs
-new fuel pump installed about a year ago
-no unusual noises when cranking
-was trying to fire a little at times but not very strong

Any ideas would be great! Kind of at a loss for what it could be. Going to replace the rotor and spark plugs today (hasn't been done in awhile). Also, can the timing belt be off? Not sure if that can happen while driving. Thanks :)
Kelly

When you pull the old plugs, compare them for dirt. I suspect that 4 of them will be very dirty. The 5th may be somewhat clean, and if so, you need to get a compression test.

If the plugs are not copper core, they probably wore out.

If none of the plugs look bad, perhaps your fuel injector relay needs a looking at.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.

before any of that, check your fuel pump relay located under hood next to fuses. It should be light green or pink colored with the number 103 on top. Get one (or a few) from a junkyard and swap it out. It happened to 2 of my 850's. The first time, it took forever to find the problem, and the 2nd, well I had one ready to go in the garage! Hope it's this simple.

Oh, do you have a CEL? Does the CEL light work? Have you had the car scanned lately?

I am getting fuel, so it's not the fuel pump. It has spark but the spark seems weak. Any ideas what would cause weak spark? Thanks!

I replaced the ignition coil and it still did not start. Anything else that I can check?? Are there any sensors that would cause a car to not start, but still have fuel and spark? Thanks!

Did you checked the master fuel injection relay?

It's located at cooling fan carrier,it's big grey relay, usually stamped Made in Hungary on it.
