Can you sell airbags?

Post by Eric66 »

I'm parting out an 850 and am curious as if you can sell the airbags? I'm curious because if you sold them and they did not deploy, would you be responsible?? Thoughts?

Sure, as long as you don't give any information that can be backtracked. Ex: real name, address, phone.

Is it legal, I don't know.

Would you be responsible?

Not unless you tempered with the internals of the airbag. If it deploys, then the manufacturer is responsible.

If I had the pleasure of selling my airbags, I would disclose as mush as possible and make an invoice with a disclaimer clearly stating that the buyer is receiving the airbags knowingly that they can't sue you for unintended deployment.

Try Craigslist.

Selling them is one thing but shipping them is another. When I bought a new seat belt it had to be shipped differently from the rest of the order and there was a bunch of paperwork involved. They can be shipped but it isn't a matter of dropping them off at th post office or the UPS Store.

You can be sued for anything. It doesn't sound like an easy case to win, but the problem is once someone has an accident and is using others, it's trivial to add you to the suit.

Maybe look at the market value of these things and figure out if it's worth the hassle

You're in MA and ask that!! Seriously, I wouldn't even think of it even if it were legal. No matter if the bag worked, or didn't work somebody would go after you. There are way way too many lawyers chasing after ever diminishing returns and MA is among the worst for nonsense suits. Even if you're not responsible, you'd need to hire an attorney to defend yourself, is it worth it? I'd leave it as part of the shell after the rest was sold off and let the junk yard figure it all out. Ask at a junk yard and see what they say if you wanted to buy one. Signed disclaimers and all that don't really hold water if the opposing side lawyer is hungry/greedy enough.

Air bags are all over ebay. From Honda to Toyota to Volvo etc.

Most people who work on cars know that they do the repair at their own risks.
This forum provides instructions on many repair jobs, the bottom line: repair things safely and after all, you are on your own. You cannot sue anyone here because the DIY instructions are less than perfect.

Heck, even junk yard sells airbags. My local junk yard lists the airbag for $43:

Back to the airbag, sell it with a disclaimer: "do it at your own risk."

Yeah, I was just coming back to say that too. I'm sort of affected because I have a brother who is a lawyer and a rich one at that. You could probably sell it without as much worry as I had in my original response.
