2002 C70 Shifting problem

Post by eldorado98 »

I drove over a really bad stretch of winter beaten road. Everything was shaking. All of a sudden it felt like the car was not in gear but it was still driving. Stepping on the gas did no good. I was going up a hill so I know the car was in gear. Then I heard a clunk like maybe it changed gears and then it was fine. I have had similar issues before when I was in stop and go traffic. Somewhere on this forum I read a post where someone had a similar problem after hitting a bad bumpy road but I can't find it. Anyone here have any ideas?

This is probably the worst post I've ever done. It really sounds crazy. Let me just ask does the Volvo (2002 C70) transmission tend to go crazy every once in awhile ? A lot of times it's like it doesn't know what gear to go into. Let's say I stop at a toll booth after driving at high speeds. When I step on the gas it's like the car is in neutral for a couple of seconds, then it jumps into gear. Yesterday after going over a really bad stretch of potholes I stepped on the gas and didn't pickup speed but the car was obviously in gear. I took my foot off the accelerator and tried again. It took two or three times then made a clunking sound and took off. 90 % of the time I have no problem but every once in awhile it goes nuts. I had the transmission flushed last year because of the same problem. That seemed to help. Should I drain it again or am I looking at something more serious or is it just a Volvo "thing" ?

When you say "flushed" do you mean it? Did you have them use a machine to flush the tranny or did you do drain-n-fill? Flush with a machine can be fatal.

Sorry. Bad choice of words. I know flushing is deadly. My mechanic did a drain and refill 3 times . Also, for what it's worth the car only has 74,000 miles. came up from Florida.

If he's a Volvo-centric mechanic, bring it in to him. 74K miles is hardly broken in. Sounds like maybe wiring for a speed sensor might have been disturbed. Might want to double-check fluid level too. PNP Switch??

If the trans is behaving badly 9 times out of 10 the system will self diagnose eventually.

Using Vida should bring up some codes that may not be pending.

Has the stop neutral software been removed? C70s were a little behind when it came to keeping up with P2 technology. It may require a TCM upgrade.

Wow! How timely! I am experiencing the same issue with my 2002 C70. It has 107K on it. However, now the issue has become inconsistent. Ont eh commute home yesterday it was shifting like a druken man. Today on the way in - smooth as silk!
