Can't add fuel - any advice please

Post by huzzsaba »

Last night i was on my way to montreal which was a 7 hour drive. On the way I stopped to fill up the tank, but the nozzle kept clicking as if it was full even though it was near empty. I tried a few times but everytime the nozzle clicked, gas would spill out the hole and omto the side of the car.I filled up 10 litres which was enough to reach my destination. After filling up, I started getting a message (fuel filler cap loose/open. I shut off the car and tightened the cap but the light remained on.

Please advise on what I should check. There is no check engine light on.

Thanks

Sounds like a blockage in the line or a blocked tank vent.

If you are handy I will post a parts diagram. If not - drive to shop. If gas, fuel or petrol is needed then put in a liter and count to 15. Then repeat until you have enough gas or just pour in on slowest setting.

You have to tell us once you find the issue as these odd situations are of great help to others.

Just to give an update, I went to the parts store and bought a new gas cap. I took the seal off the new one and replaced the seal on my factory gas cap. So far the message has not come back. I also had to fill up some gas and filled it at half speed and it went in fine.

I just don't see what a gas cap seal has to do with slow filling. Perhaps you were on a faulty pump at the gas station.

The leakage detection pump on that car also houses the vent closing valve. The vent is only closed when the LDP is running the leak test. The vent hose runs up by filler neck.

A car setting gas cap leak test and being hard to fill is odd and rare.
Gas cap leak is a brief special test after fuel level goes up via sender signal. The LDP is run and the ECM watches to see if the current draw increases a small amount just to know the pressure is building and loading the pump. My suspicion is the LDP vent valve is stuck and no sealing abut not moved to pen position thus giving escaping vapors nowhere to go so it burps back. The fuel inlet into tank is not at the top. It goes in and turns downward to make a liquid seal so the vapor above is pushed through the charcoal canister and out the vent hose up by filler neck under quarter panel behind RH wheel.

The vent hose can get spider or dirt wasp nests on it and cause poor fueling but that does nothing to make for a leak code or a fail of the gas cap presence test.

I agree it doesn't make sense that a gas cap would cause it to fill slow. I think it had something to do with the leak test the vehicle was performing since I had turned off the car to get something from inside the gas station, started the car and less than 20 seconds later turned it off to fill up the gas.

I replaced the gas cap seal because I noticed it was cracked.

Its also possible the that gas pump nozzle was defective.

So far the problem has not returned and I have been to the pump 3 times.

Been having the same problem when adding fuel and as stated by Jimmy57 a blocked vent hose. To night I checked the vent hose(J hose).there was a spider raped up in a web.I removed said spider now I can blow throw the hose. Before I could only move a little air.Tomorrow I can put it all back together and see if it cures the problem.Thank you all.
