2000 V70 struts - This manufacturer good?

Post by skjmank »

Hello,

I am looking to replace my front stuts and I am seeking an economical replacement.

I wanted to know what people thought of this strut and/or manufacturer. The product is: Gabriel G57040 ReadyMount Complete Strut Assembly

The advantage is price for all you get. It comes with strut mount and spring seat which I need to replace. Looks like suspension coil springs are part of it too.

I know I'm supposed to by Sachs or equal from FCP Euro but my car is getting up there in mileage.

Here is the link.
https://www.amazon.com/Gabriel-G57040-Re ... automotive

Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks!

My Volvo is a V70, year 2000 with 250k miles

Gabriel is well known brand for shock apsorbers.I don't see the reason why it will be different for struts.

My advice...go for it.

Gabriel is about on par with Monroe when it comes to their budget line quality

$147 is for each so just under $300 for a pair is not bad. Personally I'd rebuild with Sachs/Boge and other combinations of brands from other vendors however it will top overv $420

From what I've read the Gabriel's ride will be good but handling will get a little squishier as time goes by.

Thank you for the responses.

Am I correct in assuming that I do not need the comes with strut mounts or spring seats?

I ask because I think I'm due for a full replacement of the strut assembly.

Oh, one more question: Any special tools needed if I go with the Gabriel?

Those are the Ready mount assemblies, so the seats, mounts, bumpers, boots are all included.
It is cost effective and easy.
No special tools should be needed for those.
I had a little fun rebuilding Sachs-Boge OEM for both of mine. I dealt with spring compressors, strange nut wrenches and hammers.

It is not fun for everyone.

The problem is you DO NOT want to use any other spring seat other than Volvo's (or ipd's HD).
Most of these fail quite soon after install except the Volvo spring seat.

It's an INCREDIBLE price for a complete assy, the problem is, as was stated, the other parts, the bearing plates and the spring seats
What they include must be THE cheapest made out there :o

x2. The spring seat is historically the first-to-fail weak link. On fcp's site, the 850/S70 Volvo OE seat part number is the same as the heavy duty XC90 OE seat part number.

I also agree with Ben. I DIYed the job once and ever since have farmed it out to my Indy--2.4 hours at $76/hr. = bargain + I don't have to worry if O'Reilly's borrowed spring compressor is going to slip off and kill me dead as a mackerel. :|

Not a fun job to rebuild them without a pneumatic wrench.

Takes 1 hour per side without air tools and if the spring seats are failing getting that cross nut off without spring compressors can be an ordeal if it has embedded itself into the rubber.

Spring compressors and air tools all the way for this job if you want energy to play later in the day!!
