2003 S60 2.4T Throttle Body Replacement

Post by maddog2020 »

A local independent Volvo mechanic just told me that I would need to go to a dealer to have the throttle body replaced because they will also need to reflash the software. This doesn't seem to make sense to me. Is it really a dealer-only job to replace something as basic as a throttle body?

Thanks in advance,

Ian

The independant guy is incorrect. The 2003 turbo engine takes the Bosch ETA which is calibrated by turning ignition on to Pos II for 40 secs. The procedure is documented very well in Vida.

The earlier Magnetti Marelli unit requires reprogramming when new.
It's a DIY job that I have done myself for a customer. Hardest part is not scoring knuckles during removal. Look for them on FCP Euro's site.

Thanks, great info. The dealer quoted me $1300 to do the job. Saw the throttle body on FCP for $339, I figure a bit of lost skin is an absolute bargain for that.

I've ordered a Haynes manual, and am actually excited to bury myself in car repairs again. It's been years, and cars are quite a bit different these days, so it should be fun. My last major project was a 1967 Triumph Vitesse...

Careful with that Haynes. Mine is dead wrong on a couple areas for a 2008 S60

Remove both turbo intercooler pipes to gain access to 4 X 10mm bolts and connector. Best done with a 1/4 inch drive. 45 minute job

Optional removal of cooling fan. Good luck and let us know how you went.
