Hi folks, this is my first posting. I have a 1999 V70 that has a hard time starting sometimes. If I start the car when its cold and shut it off a few seconds later without it warming up entirely start it again and shut it off again and finally try to start it once more that's when the problem arises. It will crank and crank for at least 10 seconds before it will even attempt to start. The engine makes a noise similar to one whose timing is way out while its cranking. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Doing this in the first place is not a good idea; bad thing for any engine. Probably what you're experiencing is the engine being flooded with fuel.jacksaab wrote:Hi folks, this is my first posting. OK riddle me this. I've had a hard starting problem for a while. Sometimes it fires right up, sometimes it takes 4-10 seconds to starts. Didn't notice cloud of smoke after it fires and didn't have very pressure at fuel rail, I'm thinking check valve. Just put a new pump in, same crap, different day. I haven't checked the fire side of the equation but I'm thinking antenna ring. I've read several people have had problems with it. Car runs like a champ other than this. Any ideas for the hopelessly frustrated. Thanks.

I have a 850 that had similar issues a few years back and it ended up being my cam position sensor. Once I pulled the codes I was able to determine that was the problem. Have you checked any code readings?

Does the "Check Engine" light have to be on to have codes stored in the computer? I had the famous P0140 for the air pump and no other codes showed up. I've checked through alot of old posts and it seems that the cam position sensor shows up alot. Too bad its 170.00 bucks or so. Thanks for the hint.

No, there can be stored codes without the CEL being on. Therefore when you have issues with your car it's a good thing to check the codes, write them down and clear them. Sometimes having the code(s) themselves stored in the ECU contributes to the issue(s) at hand.

WOW! This sounds like just the same problem I have. Sometimes it starts right up, but more often than not it cranks for 5 to 15 seconds before it reluctantly catches, accompanied by a modicum of smoke from the exhaust, and an attendant "fume" smell, like a solvent or something, but not like gasoline. I have tried injector cleaner, and replaced the plugs and wires (but not the cap and rotor yet), with no effect. I am going to have a compression check done to rule out leaks. Maybe worth noting is that my average fuel economy over the last 4000 miles is a steady 17.4 MPG. Yes, it's mostly local driving, not highway, but I thought it seems quite low. It's been suggested that I may have a cylinder misfiring, which is why I replaced the plugs and wires. Any ideas?
