S70 shudder under braking

Post by shegarty »

Having a small issue with my new to me 98 S70. It its exhibitng a noticable shudder under braking at about 70-100km/hr but not at slower speeds. I pulled the front wheels today and checked the front end over. The brakes are relatively new (rotors and pads) and appear in good shape. The struts were replaced at some point and the strut mounts too and appear to be in good shape. The only thing I noticed was a very small amount of play in the control arm inner bushings but none on the ball joint end. Could this be the cause or should I be looking for something else?

Could you provide a bit more of a description of where you feel this shudder. I know you said the rotors were relatively new, but does this feel like warped rotors or can you feel it more in the steering?

To me it doesn't feel like warped rotors and there is no pulsating of the brake pedal. When I have experienced warped rotors before there was a noticeable pulsation of the pedal at almost any speed. You can feel it in the steering but it feels more like it is it coming from the frame.

Check your wheel balance. My Toyota was doing the same thing from 61 to 65 mph. Just a hair out of balance. Also, check your tie rod ends.

I would think that balance would be an issue if the vibration was happening while cruising. This shudder is only present while braking when the car has significant momentum.

Possibly built up crap on rotors. Was the car sitting for a time before you bought it? You may just need to make a few hard stops from high speed to burn off any residue on the rotors. Run you finger over the rotors (cold please) and feel for any rough spots. Look too for any blueish spots on the rotor indicating overheated at some point. If you find that only new rotors can fix that condition so don't bother turning.
