2004 V70 T5 & XC90 oil in intercooler pipe

Post by volvo4fun »

Recently I put in a new compressor in my V70 T5, but did not get the hose clamp tight enough on the hose between the intercooler and the pipe running on top of the engine towards the turbo.

Merging onto the beltway I heard poeff, and the engine died instantaneously, no power steering, all the lights on. Luckily I was able to get to the shoulder. There I found that the hose had come off the intercooler.

It was not an easy job getting the hose on without scalding myself on the radiator and all the related hot hoses there. Car started right up not had a problem since.

Two days later my neighbor calls me and complains about a whistling sound from the engine (XC90 T6). He said everything was working fine, but the sound was very loud. So I go and look and find that same hose lose on the other end where it connects to the hard plastic pipe running on top of the engine. It was still sitting sort of in place.

Interesting such a different result from a hose getting lose on one side or the other. The instantaneous failure must have confused the engines control system.

So my question is this. On the V70 the inside of the hose and pipe is covered with oil, on the XC90 it is much drier.

Am I looking at a future turbo seal job?

How many miles are on the V70? I wouldn't worry about a thin film is if there is not enough to accumulate drops
