1982 Volvo Green book vs Bentley
I have a question. I am getting ready to trouble shoot my CIS fuel system. The problem appears to be coming from the fuel distributor or the wur. I am really suspecting the control pressure valve in the fuel distributor. I have ruled out everything else and just purchased the fuel test gauge with all adapters. Which manual would be best? The Bentley manual or the Volvo green manual for the CIS system. I was an ASE tech until 2000 so I know a lot about vehicle systems but the CIS system is different but the rest of the car I am familiar with. Incase your wondering my problem: after the car sits for a period of 6.5 hours or more (hot or cold) it takes about 4 minutes of intermittent cranking to get it started. Once started it runs fine and will restart without a problem, just a little rough at idle but not bad at all. Sparks plugs are dry during the time of cranking. I suspect the valve O-rings are leaking and all fuel pressure is bleeding off at the return to tank line.

I have a new check valve in the box that just arrived. I have ruled it out with 95% assurance but when I get ready and hook up pressure tester I will know for sure. I bought this car from a car collector and he had this problem since 2009 and tried to correct it replacing various parts but never fixed it and according to the receipts the shop he took it to was guessing pretty good also. I bought this car last November and since this problem has gotten worse it's time to get serious and fix it.

Is hot restart after being shut down 10-20 minutes OK?
CIS will usually have a big problem with hot soak restarts when fuel distributor non-return valve is not sealing or if fuel pump check valve isn't sealing.
Cold starts will be faintly longer with those problems.
Have you tested cold start performance using a little gasoline fed into intake through idle air control valve hose?
Your problem as listed sounds like a non functioning cold start injector.

It will restart fine after 20 minutes. As far as cold start injector goes, our low temps have been upper 80's to lower 90's. Don't laugh if I have this wrong. Like I said I need a manual. It will do it no matter what after sitting for 6.5 hours or more. No I have not tried introducing gas to intake and I have never used any quick start spray. Thank you for advice. On Sunday I will investigate the cold start valve further. Can that valve (if not working) cause 3-4 minutes of intermittent cranking to start?

You indicated plugs were dry, which indicates fuel pressure is not upto working specs.voodoorobaz wrote:cold start valve...Can that valve (if not working) cause 3-4 minutes of intermittent cranking to start?
CIS injectors require some 30-40 psi to crack open....somewhere around 72 psi is your working pressure.
I would manually run your fuel pumps for 30 seconds before cranking engine.
