....Before I swapped out the old 80amp alternator the car ran but would "stumble" after it ran for a while and die as it got hotter, and it actually left me stranded a couple times. so I decided to swap out the old 80amp alternator and put in the 100amp Denso alternator and now I get dash lights but the car won't turn over. It just shows me the dash lights and that's it. fuses are good.
This is what I've done so far:
1. put in thicker ground wire and starter wire in the car as instructed by various volvo owners.
2. checked for voltage at the hot wire coming off the alternator.
3. put a Copper connector on the hot wire of the 100amp because the 80amp eyelet was too small.
Any advice is appreciated thanks.
1983 242DL installed 100amp Denso alt. and now it won't s
I just put a test light on the 100amp alternator and it's indeed getting fire. but nothing to the starter to kick it over.

Last I knew, battery's BIG positive goes directly to starter, and then another cable goes to alternator.98T5 wrote:100amp alternator ....but nothing to the starter to kick it over
So, tighten that starter-solenoid's nut, and charge up your battery.
I'll check that starter solenoid nut for tightness, but the Battery is brand new only 1 month old93Regina wrote:Last I knew, battery's BIG positive goes directly to starter, and then another cable goes to alternator.98T5 wrote:100amp alternator ....but nothing to the starter to kick it over

Get a 12 Volt test lamp....touch it to smaller nut on solenoid, and have someone turn key switch to start.98T5 wrote:starter solenoid
Brake on, in park...etc safety meansures.
If test lamp does not light up, then run a wire from battery and touch that little nut on solenoid.

You want to leave a test lamp permanently attached? Hopefully you meant the temporary wire. Even then that could result in the starter running constantly.

Let me backup...test lamp's wire or wire touches terminal S with female terminal (already hooked) hooked on S. Wire from key switch hooks into terminal S....98T5 wrote:I will do this....

No, I was asking if I leave the wire from the battery to the solenoid. I'm just trying to get the car startedlummert wrote:You want to leave a test lamp permanently attached? Hopefully you meant the temporary wire. Even then that could result in the starter running constantly.

No.
the idea he was telling you about "then run a wire from battery and touch that little nut on solenoid."
will start the car.
The idea here is that of jumping the system. You'll see sparks.
If you somehow managed to leave that wire connected it would keep running the starter and burn it out.
I figure you already figured this out but it seemed like you weren't really positive of what you were talking to about doing.
