1994 850 Speedometer

Post by rlkareha »

I'm trying to fix my 94 volvo the speedometer won't work. I am looking to buy a used instument cluster for it, the question that comes up from the sellers is to check with my local volvo dealer to see if it needs programing. I don't have a local dealer closet is 100 miles away. So I'm looking for some help. Do the need programed?

In 1994 Volvo used 2 types of instrument clusters. Follow this link, gives a ton of details. Not sure why the dealer would need to program it though.

There is a kinda dealer programming to set the mileage in the cluster memory. You can do it yourself but it only works once per cluster and it doesn't actually change the indicated mileage on the odometer, only in the cluster memory. There are some other regional settings like miles and km but if you get a compatible domestic cluster it should all be good to go.

Lee, Are you speaking of the mileage stored in the ECU? I have a 94 and I don't see anything that needs to be programmed.

Nothing needs to be programmed for the cluster to work.

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it I'm going to order a cluster and try it I don't know what else to do to get it working at this point. When I get it in I'll let you know how I made out.

The stored mileage in the ECU is a misnomer. It never actually is stored in the ECU, it is stored in the cluster and that is what you can reprogram. The provision is there in diagnostic mode four or five (I'm at the cabin and the book is back at home) and it was created so that the dealer could match the stored mileage in the event that the cluster needed to be replaced. It is all done with the DTC button box so it doesn't require anything special other than the codes.

Okay so I ordered a Yazaki speedometer online and today I got a VDO speedometer sent to me. Are they interchagable?

They are interchangeable - sort of. The trip information module doesn't work with the Yazaki.

What did you have before?
