whats to be gained from R manifold on s70 T5?

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

DIRECT PATH OF EXHAUST PORTS TO DRIVE THE TURBO IS MUCH MORE EFFICIENT THAN THE LPT OR EVEN OLDER T-5 TYPE.
Will an R exhaust manifold bolt up to a glt with no problems?

Yes It will also bolt up to the GLT. Your LPT engine uses the same exhaust port and turbo mounting configuration as the later "R" manifold, which became the 2.5L turbo manifold. It uses a different runner design, but mounts the same. Some say the power gains aren't significant on otherwise stock setups. There is a possibility that it may reduce the incidence of burnt valves due to improved scavenging, and it sounds a little different than the earlier manifolds. Look for one in any 2.5T equipped S60, V70, XC70, XC90 .
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
