2004 XC90 T6 Looking to scrap it...recommendations?

Post by cborjon »

My wife's XC90 is dying and I refuse to put anymore money in to what has been one lemon of an SUV. It did make it 127,000 miles, but this XC90 has had just about every possible problem listed in this forum for these 2004 XC90's (see below).

After getting the mystery "No Oil Pressure - Stop Safely" warning and reduced power, we took it into a good independent mechanic and he found metal shavings and babbitt in the oil.

The car is now in Reno, NV and if I take it easy, I can probably get it back home to the San Francisco bay area. Anyone have a recommendation for an auto recycler that will give me a good price for it? I am thinking the parts on it are definitely worth more that its current blue book value given that it is barely running. Recommendations?

Sorry to hear that man. I can totally relate as your story is so similar to mine. I had a 2004 XC90 T6 AWD that was CPO'd when I bought it at 44k mi. First trans went at about 61k. Warranty covered full replacement. I wound up getting about 131k out of it when the second trans went. My wife loved the feel of the car and I was ready to explore something else. We found a used 2009 XC90 V8 AWD that was a CPO at CarMax. I had just replaced the front axle about 7 mos prior but I was going down the path of good money after bad. So many other things were broken or just wonky.

Nav Sys - broken
Power fold in mirrors - broken - would move slightly with wind
Sensor in brake master - bad so that everytime you started the car the warning indicator would go on
Radio - cutting out on LH side of car
Leaking on passenger side - compressed air never seemed to fix sunroof drain issue
RH side 3rd row seat - broken
Hood pistons - shot

I somehow nursed it 2+ hours south to the dealer. Got $2k on the trade-in which covered the tax and some reg fees but I was done with it. I was in a bind as it was my wife's main car for carting 3 kids around. My Jeep Wrangler just wasn't going to cut it for her for very long.

I have to say that I was skeptical of getting into another XC90 but the V8 AWD config is like a totally different car. It really rides nice.

An auto scrapper isn't going to give you much. You could always take it to CarMax and they'll give you cash on the spot for it even if you aren't buying something else there . Yes. You won't feel all warm and fuzzy with how much you get. Your alternative is to try to sell it to someone as a mechanic's special but that could take a very long time.
