subbing for air flow meter?

Post by johng »

My '93 wagon is showing 'air flow sensor' in it's trouble codes. I just got the car with 200K on the clock and it's getting about 27mpg at highway speeds. The air flow meter number is 0280 212 016. All I can find is a 0280 212 007 meter. Can this be subbed in or do I have to wait to find a 016? Also, the air filter was filthy and since I could not find a 016 I replaced the air filter and put the 016 back into place. The car seems to run much smoother. So, can a clogged air filter show up as a 'bad' air flow meter?

you need the 016 try www.car-part.com go to the page with the asterisk you should be able to get one for $25. It might just be a bad electiical connection and you unplugging it and plugging it back in might have made it better.

a clogged air filter is bad news my friend...a bad MAF on the other hand would make your volvo run real badly or not at all. When my MAF went, my car would start but die as soon as I hit the gas.

by the way if you replace your air mass sensor do not fail to change the thermostat in the air box. When they go bad they feed hot air continuously to the air mass meter and "cook" it. It is just meant to feed warm air when the engine is cold.

For now I'm going to pretend that I somehow "fixed" the air flow meter by reinstalling it. This is nonsense, of course, but the car runs nice and I have a 360 mile trip Saturday to test the milage. Then I'll reset the codes and see what my brain box tells me is wrong, if anything. One thing I noticed about my AFM was that the wire was a different color depending on which end you looked through. It was kind of red when viewed from one end and silver from the other. On all the other AFMs I looked at the wire was silver colored when viewed from both sides.
