02 S80 T6 Oil Cooler Spilling it's guts

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

02 S80 T6 Oil Cooler Spilling it's guts

Post by AVIP »

Looking to buy this S80 in town with a t6 and 150k on the od... the car pukes a milkey brown from a supposed blown oil cooler. Wants 2000. Needs new tires and some tlc plus the problem listed..

How hard is it to change the oil cooler on this car? It has for sure seen better days and just spilling out everything it has. It would be a great car!

I wouldn't touch it for $500. That just doesn't sound right at all plus it's a t6.

Hah, all of the T6 fears...

All of the issues, are P2 issues other than the transmission.

So the LCAs, flame trap, turbo oil return seals, struts, spring seats, abs module, CEM, etc.

None of those are exclusive to the T6, as they're P2 issues.

The real reason not to touch it is it's a neglected P2. That means everything that goes wrong on a P2, is likely broken. The cherry on top is the engine could have damage from coolant contamination. It could be the oil cooler, or the head gasket. The P2 rads like to leak, and running low on coolant means popping head gaskets.

Oil cooler is a piece of cake. There are maybe four bolts/screws holding it to the block. and two coolant hoses. Make sure to put new hoses and two new seals between the cooler and the block.

Drain the coolant from the rad before removing the hoses. You will still have some pour out, but not nearly as much.

Well after closer investigation it is in worse shape than i thought. Not worth two grand imo. I went to look again today and did see a hole in the radiator, and upon startup a huge cloud from burnt oil shows up. I could buy a 7600 mile 850 for 4 grand for a better deal. Very unfortunate. Always wanted a P2 but I am not in a financial position to pay that much and have a gamble on it.
