Just started happening, sometimes when putting it in reverse it doesn't go. But it doesn't seem like its an actual transmission problem, there is no short time that it goes into reverse, doesn't move then you push the gas and it jumps into reverse. Instead this seems like a problem more electronically as when I put it in reverse it seems to stay in neutral. A couple weeks ago it did throw a P0740 code of torque converter clutch circuit/open, as well as a P1618 code. I cleared it, hasn't come back on and has been fine for the past two weeks. Any ideas? Also, the shop says I need new front axles, what are some symptoms I should look for to see if I need new axles? Also, there is a fuel smell in the car when outside air is on, I thought it would be a purge valve or maybe fuel pump leaking, or some line under the hood, even the vent box? They seem to think its the catalytic convertor as the smell of fuel seems to be more of a burned smell rather than a raw fuel smell. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey Speedy, it's not good to have multiple issues in the same thread.

Tranny: Have you checked the fluid level?

Fuel smell: You likely have a fuel leak or open fuel vacuum line.

Axles: If the axles click when you turn into a parking spot, they need to be replaced. If the boots are torn, the boots need replaced or new boots installed.

Thanks. The fluid is good. Haven't issues shifting all week, so I think it is a solenoid in the tranny. As fas as the axles go, I think I will need two new front ones. A shop quoted me 530.00 for everything. Thinking I might go ahead and do that. Thanks for the help guys.

If the fluid is OK and the axles are OK your transmission is dying a fast death
I had one of these I bought a few years ago
I bought it for next to nothing knowing the problem was there
Got it home and in a couple of days the entire transmission gave it up!

Had a sometimes-flaky solenoid die on me, and lost reverse. There are 3 serviceable solenoids in the AW50-42 - 2 shift solenoids and a torque converter solenoid.

But before we go down that road - from what I read, sometimes you get Reverse no problem at idle speed, and other times it needs to be revved up to engage?
