1998 850. stalls when engine is warm

Post by michaelw84 »

My volvo starts and runs great but sometimes after run in 5 mins it idles rough then stalls . The one thing I notice is that every time this happens the temp Guage is not working which leads me to assume that the temp sensor is not working .. could a simple radiator flush fix this to release whatever gunk is on sensor...or easier to just change sons or ....Also where is the sensor located

It does sound like either a bad Engine Coolant Temperature sensor or a bad connection at the connector to it. The ECT sensor is located just below the thermostat. If you trace the overflow tube from the radiator overflow tank to the engine the thermostat is just below that cap and the ECT sensor is just below that.

Given that your gauge goes from reading properly to not at all I would suggest you start at the connector which is just behind the power steering pump. Make sure the connections are clean and the connector fits tightly.
