Hello MVS,
I need some advice from some of you Volvo experts out there. My Niece (17) just received a 1986 240 stick shift that is in great condition as a gift for her first car. She is still learning to drive and "it is scary" :) as she cant use a clutch. Can someone tell me if it is possible to make this car an automatic, and how difficult that would be. I appreciate your knowledge, and I thank you in advance for any help.
Best Regards,
JP

No brainer, teach her....just like her grandmother use to drive a stick shift.

Yes, it can be converted, but its cheaper to sell that vehicle, and get one with auto.

My son, 16 at the time, wanted to learn how to shift. He bought a 5 speed Saturn, I took him around showing him the basics for thinking while shifting, i.e. what the car is doing. In a week or so he was like an old pro.
You could probably trade the 240 for another with an automatic, lots of desire out there for a shifter. Don't bother trying to convert, not worth the effort.

Man, wish you were in Kansas (try clicking your heels together), I would trade for my automatic. I recently bought my neighbor's 240 GL since they we're trading it in and were only going to get $300 for it. It's an auto but I prefer sticks. Still, I am enjoying driving it and fixing it up. Good luck!
