1996 Volvo 960 Engine Oil Leak Passenger side near bolts

Post by nutmegrose »

I have a 1996 Volvo 960 that I just bought. I just had the oil changed on August 29th. This past weekend, I could smell oil burning on the engine when I parked my car. When I opened the hood today, on the top side of the engine, passenger side, right at one of the bolts, it has a very slow drip of oil that is leaking down and burning off the hot engine. What could be the cause of the leak. Disabled mother of five little ones that is hoping that it is a cheap and easy fix so I really appreciate your help. The oil is clear and does not appear burnt in color, looks relatively like it did as it comes out of the oil container. Can anyone give me a good guess what you think this leak may be from and how serious it is? Thank you!

Here is the picture of my engine. There is no blowing oil while gunning the engine or while it is running. Just a small, slow drip from a bolt. If you look at the passenger side of the engine at the center, you see the metal tube, move to your left, the first bolt there is where the oil is leaking. Thank you for your help! Any information would be appreciated.

It looks like it is leaking from the egr tube. Depending on where you are located a member may be able to help you with your oil leak.

More than likely, the lube technician spilled some oil on top of the engine, and the spilled oil has made it over to the passenger side, since the easiest way out is around the egr tube.

It's not a serious problem. Check the oil level regularly, fill it when low, and you should be fine.

The cap is on the other side I doubt its a spill. I've seen that tube get blocked and pour oil out.

Thank you Jesse and Ethan. I go to the mechanic tomorrow for rear brakes and he is going to look at it. I am giving him both of your answers. He is not a Volvo mechanic, but an army mechanic and he is going to help me as much as possible, so your experience is invaluable.
