From what I read, I believe Volvo is using only the 90 degree thermostat for replacements. My 98 S70 GLT calls for an 87 degree thermostat in the owners manual, but when I removed the original thermostat to replace it, it was a 90 degree thermostat from the factory. I bought the car new and it had never been replaced. I replaced it with an 87 degree thermostat and all is fine. Bottom line, I don't think it matters.
