2.5t timing belt change

Post by Anfdavis »

Just completed a timing belt change and the car seemed to run ok, off maybe a tooth. CEL was on but I was not able to pull the code. I tried to realign the timing marks and now the car will not turn over, sounds like the starter spins but does not turn the crank??? Any ideas?

You could be off timing ( your engine has at least one VVT cam). If you set it wrong you may have bent valves.

If the starter is turning freely but not engaging you likely have a starter issue. The engagement mechanism can be stuck or broken.

Can you turn the engine over by the pulley on the crank? With the plugs removed it should spin with no interference with the valves or resistance from compression.

To check the timing on a VVT engine, turn the cams 90 degrees clockwise past their alignment marks and then turn counter clockwise until the "crankshaft" marks line up. Then examine cams for correct placement.

Upload some pics and let us see what you see after 90 degrees past (on cams ) and then back to crank alignment marks.

If the cams are more than 2 teeth off we will want to pull the starter to look for damage to the bendix gear and or flywheel.
