1999 V70 xc - Fuel leak - not from tank

Post by dallasrules »

I just bought a 99 v70 yesterday. I am very excited about it. I had a 97 v90 for about 4 years and loved it. When it died, I bought a 95 Mercedes and I hate it. Anyway, while bringing this car home yesterday, it developed a major fuel leak. The tank is on the right side, and the gas is leaking on the left side, just behind the drivers side rear door. I did not notice this when I test drove it, but after about 40 miles on the road, the gas was just pouring out. It went through about $30 in gas in 100 miles. Does anyone have any advice? Also, a couple more things I noticed. The steering wheel vibrates pretty rough at up to 65 mph. After that, it smooths out. I was thinking the tires, but the look really nice. Does this sound like front end alignment? It does not really pull. Next, the abs light is on and the traction light. The manual said the traction light would be on if it was turned off, but I can not find a switch on the dash. Where it says the switch should be is where my sunroof button is. Just wondering what I need to check out for the abs. My first step is going to be to check the fuse. Lastly, sometimes when you put it in gear and start forward or backwards there is a loud clunk under where the drivers seat is. You can feel it under you also. This is my biggest concern because I am thinking drive train and they could be expensive.

I just love this car, so any help on any of these issues is majorly appreciated. I am a minor dyi-er. Nothing too major.

Thanks.

You probably need a new ABS module from Matty moo at Midwest.

The gas tank sits across the driveshafts on both side of the car, so you might have a left side leak

Many people remove drive train components and turn an AWD into a FWD successfully.

Control arms and tie rods are the wear items of the front end

Matt has been a wonderful supporter of the Volvo community for a long time. Many of us have his rebuilt ABS control units in our cars. Lifetime warranty and low price, and mainly, reliable product mens he is usually our first port of call for this part and its diagnostics.

Trust him! He's good and will get you fixed right up. Matty Moo is also a contributor here at the MVS site.
How many miles on the car? You need to thoroughly check the suspension and axles on the car.
Fuel tank issues are a problem with the AWD models due to having to drop the rear sub-frame. You do need to have this checked out though. You are destined to become a MAJOR diy'er :-)

The leak may be nothing more than a rusted out fuel line. See if you can narrow it down. If the car doesn't leak sitting in place with the ignition on, start the car and see if it starts leaking. You might be able to see where the gas is coming out. Be careful, don't want that crap in your eyes, wear some goggles.
