2000 V70R Rear seat belt latch question

Post by scot850 »

My daughter complained that one of the latches of the double unit in the rear of this car was not holding the belt, and the belt kept coming out. I found a piece of material stuck in it and having removed it, cleaned the latch and lubed it, it works fine again.

Question is there are 2 mini bungee ropes attached to the unit, on the outside of each belt latch. They are not attached. What is the purpose of them and how do they attach?

I have attached some photos to try and show you what I am referring to, from a spare set I have.

On one end of the bungee there is a crimped end with a round hole in it, and the other end has a hook.
One of the bungees has the round hole attached to the spring wire where it slides in under the belt latch. Assuming that is where it is meant to be, where does the other end with the hook attach, and what is their purpose?

In this picture you can see the bungee with the round hole and the hook. I can pull the wire spring out from under the belt latch and the round hole can then hook on there when the spring is re-fitted. It then runs around the rounded plastic piece and then where to hook the hooked end?

If anyone can post a picture of a correctly fitted one I'd much appreciate it!

Thanks,

Neil.

The elastic cord makes the latch sproing back to proper position when you are not handling it. Or something like that, they don't seem to do much ... Hang on I will go get a pic.

Thanks Eric! Is the picture of a sedan seat? If so, I wonder if there is a ring on a wagon seat as they fold down. I'll check tomorrow and let you know how I get on!

That's a 98 wagon. And, you're welcome!

You are 100% correct again! Decided to just go and have a quick look as the car is in the attached garage. Found the rings hidden under the rear seat back lower edge. Strange thing is that 2/3 of the bungees were completely disconnected at both ends, and one at just the hooked end. I guess this is possibly only a wagon thing. What it does is hold the seatbelt latched up so they don't fall under the lower seat squab when you drop it back into position. I'm guessing the bungees stretch with age and possibly allows the hooked end to detach when the seat back is lowered and raised.

Anyway, issue solved with your help so many thanks!
