1996 850 Fuel pump - recommendations?
So now that I have determined my fuel pump needs to be replaced, what is the best option on a budget? Buying the OEM assembly for $350 is not going to happen... I've read that some people like the Walbro pump. I'd rather get a whole assembly rather than installing a new pump in the old assembly. Open to suggestions!

I went with an Airtex in my 99 V70 (pretty sure it's the same pump). Lifetime warranty, and less than half the price of a lot of others. I've been happy with it.
By the way, don't be intimidated by the "pump assembly." If you're mechanic enough to get it out of the tank, you can easily disassemble & reassemble it.

Jeff is right. Getting to the pump is over half the battle. The swap takes a minute, literally. I used the Walbro and it's been satisfactory ever since.
The problem is there's not much of an alternative. At least when I was looking for a solution. It was either get a new assembly, an old working assembly or a pump with elbow grease. I was a student then and the Walbro was the cheapest I could find.

I used a Deatschwerks DW200 with 9-201-1000 package. It has 3 year no fault warranty.

Pretty much a drop in, though I had to dremel out the plastic hosing a little bit.
If you want a non Volvo pump assembly, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Volvo-Fuel-pump ... e5&vxp=mtr
Not sure if I trust the pump.

If you need one in a hurry the Airtex E8643 model from Advance Auto Parts is actually a re-packaged Walbro.

For the pump, what cn90 said: it is the OEM pump, and it will cost you about $80.
If you want a pre-assembled one your options are limited to get a quality assembly. Maybe get the one housing tryingbe linked but put the Bosch pump in it. I would probably just stick with the old OEM assembly.

I did not want to pull everything apart without having the replacement pump. Now that I have a new pump I can see the issue. I removed the pump assembly. I can see that the tube that goes from the electric pump to the steel tube at the top of the assembly has come loose. Total cost to fix this would have been about an hour of my time...
Question, the orange rubber fitting on the return line is starting to fall apart. What is the purpose of the orange fitting? It looks like it might just simply be there to slow the return of the excess fuel back into the gas tank. Not sure. Hopefully it is not critical as mine looks rough.

I think the return line nozzle is to direct the return fuel away from the pump itself but I'm not sure. So long as the fuel is coming back in a liquid form it really isn't that volatile. Gasoline gets volatile and explosive when it gets atomized into a mist. I just had a pump apart a week or so ago and It didn't look totally mission critical to me.
