96 850 GLT odometer gear replacement

Im still contemplating doing the odometer gear on my 96. I tried a couple months ago. I got all the dash fasteners out, tried to pull the dash top off and it felt like it would snap before removing. Has anyone tried to remove the dash on 15 or 18 year old 850? I imagine there is a lot less pliability, and material will be more likely to snap than bend. That seems like the hard part of the job. I've replaced gears on the 240, the cluster slides right out.

With all the fasteners out and the four nuts that attach the air bag it should come out very easily.

Remove all screws (I want to say 11 screws total), all vents, all 4 air bag bolts, air bag plug and the entire dash with the air bag. Do not undo only half the dash the way IPD instruction says. You'll likely to cause damage that way. Don't forget two screws right near the air bag.

I can do it pretty quickly since I've done it. Make sure all light blubs are in good condition, if not replace them while the dash is out.

You may want to consider dropping in a cluster from a '98 x70 car. Nice upgrade, especially if it has the trip computer in it.
