2002 S60 Anti skid causes lock up in 3rd gear

Post by efcgiraffe »

Hi,
I bought automatic S60 2.0 turbo in May. Air con pump seized (according to garage, caused by low voltage) so after previous owner had already replaced one the garage recommended a new pump but not wired in, so no air con. Living in England it is hardly a discomfort. I have put a new battery on but it hasn't changed anything apart from it not going flat after 5 minutes of sitting with the radio and the fan on.
All this seemed to happen at the same time an "anti skid service required" light came on so I don't know if that is the cause or effect of the problem(s).
Car runs great for around 3.5 to 4.5 miles, then anti skid light comes on. At first, I thought it was going into safe mode but after a couple of months I realised it is kicking into third gear and staying there. If I am doing in excess of 52 mph when the anti skid light comes on, nothing happens until I slow down. As soon as speed drops to 52 mph the car lurches with a quite severe judder :o and then stays in 3rd gear until the engine is switched off.
If I am going slower than 52, there is a slight to severe feeling as the car moves into third gear, depending on which gear it is in and the amount of engine revs.
It will pull away normally in "L" but it kicks violently as I move the shift through "3".
Continuing the manual shift, "4" and "D" make no difference.
I put the car into a Volvo specialist. He found 10 faults and cleared them all except the engine service light and the alarm service light which disappears as soon as the engine is running. He said the anti skid was off and it stayed off but he obviously hadn't driven it far enough (although he said he had) and then charged me £180 for the privilege.

I don't really want to spend mega bucks on something that doesn't cure the fault or leads to a procession of new parts but if I could get rid of the "anti skid" I'd be really pleased with this car..
Any ideas   please? Or even better a guaranteed solution :D LOL, Thanks, Dave
