hi guys!

my name is Prince from Manila Philippines

i just recently aquired a 1997 850 A/T non turbo

im using the car for two days now and ive noticed that after a cold start when i shift to drive (D) its stuck on 3rd gear every single time but sometimes when i go to a full stop shifting from D to N then D it would go to its normal shifting but mostly its on limp mode.

read some topics regardig this topic but decided to create a new one since i think i have a different case of problem.

is there any quick fix that you can share?

I had similar symptoms about 10 years ago during cold weather on my '97 855 GLT. At the time there were about 70K miles on the car (currently ~175K). The transmission would stay in 3rd gear, making it really difficult to accelerate from a stop. I read up on the problem and saw that some people had 'fixed' the problem by rowing the gear selector knob back and forth about a dozen times to clean up the electrical contacts in the gear selector switch (the so-called "PNP" switch). I tried this out and it seemed to work pretty well... no problems for 10 years.
If you haven't tried this remedy, you should try it and see if it helps. If it doesn't help you may have to replace the switch or you may have a problem inside the transmission itself.

hi thanks for the reply!

already did rowing the gear selector back and forth.i started the engine then rowed the lever for about 30x but it doesnt work huhuhu.or maybe i missed something.

for the last two days normal shifting doesnt came back.

i really thinck that the pnp switch is the suspect but finding parts here in manila is very hard and quite expensive thats why im looking for other alternatives that can fix the problem.
