96 850 Are cams "trapped"?

Post by JimBee »

If piston #1 is not slightly before TDC when the cams are properly aligned and installed, can they get trapped so that it's impossible to time the engine without pulling the cams, setting the #1 and starting over?

I have had cams that I needed to move in order to get timed properly that would bind. I didn't remove cams to remedy this. I turned the crank a little and then turned the cam and then turned the crank back a few degrees and then the cam would turn until it was back around where it needed to be.
I've studied the piston locations with crank at assembly index head off and if you turn the crank to drop the highest piston another piston will come up enough to be in the way of full valve lift.

Not sure what you are asking, however, if the crank is on it's mark, you can spin the cams around 360 degrees on the I5 motor. It may be possible to walk the cams around enough to get the crank on mark. Once the crank is on mark, the cams can be spun around anywhere.
