Hi,
I am about to buy a 2001 Volvo S60 with a broken DIM. Is there a way to check the actual mileage since the cluster is broken?
Thanks!
2001 S60, How do I find the actual mileage?

The true mileage is supposedly stored in the DIM. You might want to ask a dealer or a well-equiped independent Volvo shop if they can perform a reset to bring the displayed mileage into line with your car's true mileage. They may be reluctant to do this unless they can read, beyond any doubt, the actual mileage stored in the CEM. (To simply roll back the mileage without that prove could be construed as an illegal roll-back.)
There are several different theories as to what happens to the displayed mileage when you install a used DIM and that DIM's mileage doesn't match what's stored in the CEM. I read one owner's claim that when you have that mismatch, the higher of the two will be displayed. But in my personal experience, I installed a used DIM into my car from a donor that had way less mileage than my car. After installation the displayed mileage was that of the donor.
On another note, before plunking down the $'s on that car, have you researched the reported transmission issued related to the 2001 model year?

Use a Dice-Vida
Costs less than 200 bucks on the internet. AND, will be a very useful tool as long as you have a Volvo.
Or take the car to someone who has one.

IIRC the DIM can't be rolled back - the most I had seen was a reference to being able to program the DIM when it was brand new, otherwise once it was running it simply did it's own thing? It wouldn't surprise me if there was no official support for this, as it might seem too easy to abuse...They may be reluctant to do this unless they can read, beyond any doubt, the actual mileage stored in the CEM
