1997 850R Factory Radio Amp

Post by koffinb »

Does anyone know the output/specs of the Factory Volvo amplifier? I am considering replacing it with an aftermarket unit and adding aftermarket speakers as well. I currently have an aftermarket headunit and I really can't tell the difference between the sound of this car with an amp and my previous volvos that didn't have an amp. Could it be because I have not upgraded the speakers yet?

4x40w and 4x50w were the 2 common ones on the 850.

4x40 was under the heater core; 4x50 was under the seat.

My amp blew and I had trouble finding one; you lose a lot of the high-volume clearness, but it sounds almost identical from the stock HU at lower volumes.

Well this IS an interesting thread. How do you go about bypassing the amp under the seat? Do we need a bypass loom?

I just picked up a '97 850R and I honestly don't think there's much that could be improved on that sound system. Miles better than the system in our '99 V70 N/A and '04 V70 N/A. Obviously we're still talking about good sound systems here, but Edgar Meyer has a fairly easy time making all sorts of things buzz and rattle and distort and sound not so great in the '99. It's a bit harder for him in the '04, but man, in the R he just doesn't stand a chance at making that sound system sound bad. Or at least he couldn't do it before we decided we better turn it down before we broke our ears... I'm really not convinced its worth anyone's time to upgrade it. Volvo already got it well past the point of diminishing returns imo.

If you don't know who Edgar Meyer is, here's one of the songs we use to benchmark sound systems. Both of our V70s have some issues with it. The 850R? No problem. http://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Palmyra/3JrsED?src=5
