Volvo 850 Exhaust Leak Hunt

Post by Baptiste1106 »

So i have an awful exhaust leak coming in from my cabin and determined it's an exhaust smell do to me matching it from my tail pipe. Took my car in to an exhaust shop and nothing from the exhaust cat, mid section or tail. Only place left is the exhaust manifold and/or gasket. So i purchased the 1 piece SS exhaust manifold from ARD Tuning for $22 to save my self the hassle of gaskets slipping off while i'm working. Now this is my first time touching the exhaust manifold, any pointers i should follow ? Any procedures out there on how to remove the manifold ? Pre-soak the bolts in PB blaster maybe. I also found an awesome write-up on how to find exhaust leaks. Here are the photos

I always like to know where the leak is before fixing it (removing exhaust never brings me great pleasure) .
Try this :
Lift the car and start it. Use a towel folded up and place it on the tailpipe blocking flow. The exhaust will pressurize and you will hear and find the leak. (thick towel keeps had from burning)
It is very helpful to have a friend hold the towel while you find the leak.
