1998 v 70 awd - burning wire smell, fried ecm

Post by jaymorgan1 »

256 k. I love this car, ran great. Its my f - 150 if you know what I mean. I have read where a couple people with this problem bit the bullet and pulled the wiring harness in the engine bay, found numerous potential problems which they repaired and their cars ran fine afterward. Also read that this is almost impossible because the harness is not modular and goes through the firewall. I would really like to make sure the harness is 100%. Does anyone who has done this have any "lessons learned" advice ? Thanks, Jay

The harness is indeed not modular and replacing it completely is a nightmare. The burned wire smell is good from a diagnostic perspective. If the insulation has gotten hot enough to smell it is usually pretty easy to find visually but you will likely need to open the split looms to find the offending wire.

What, exactly, doesn't work? Give us a little background and we might be able to point you in the general area.
