Recently put this car back on the road after being 'stored' for a couple years. Maintained the battery with an automatic trickle charger and started and warmed up the engine/tranny occasionally to keep things lubed.
This weekend we went on a trip and now that we are about 300 miles from home, the key will not come out of the ignition switch.
We can start and the drive the car ok but because we can't remove the key, the doors will not lock.
Prior to parking the car for a couple years, I had the PCV ventilation system replaced along with the dealer installing a new ignition switch because the key wouldn't rotate the old switch. It had to be towed to the dealer at that time. Also had a tranny leak and leaky turbo lines repaired at that time.
Of course, since we are on the road, I can't drive it to the dealer and it is Saturday so the nearest 'out of town' dealer isn't even open.
I tried running the shifter from park to drive about 6 times in a row in case it might be some PNP switch located under the shifter handle. Not sure if the PNP switch is in that location or ???
Any one have any advise on possibly solving this problem?
Hopefully we can get home in the present condition, I can then connect my BSR diagnostic unit to see it there are any codes...i.e. there are presently no error messages or 'trouble' lights on the dash
Edit: Forgot to mention that the key does not rotate back to the 'zero' position, at least I believe it normally is supposed to got the the position which has '0' molded into the plastic???? In the position where it is sitting, there are no lights on the dash and hopefully it is not draining the battery while we sleep overnight in the motel...
2nd Edit: I did a search and found where someone with a 2007 had the same problem. The owner said that he had no problem starting the car but that it turned out that perhaps the battery was not producing enough voltage. I believe he jumpered the car and then was able to remove the key. Then he purchased an new battery and the problem did not reoccur.
????
Thks,
Dwight

Just as a follow up and for possible benefit of others, I took the car to a local Volvo independent shop after also doing some research on my copy of VADIS.
As I suspected, it was the interlock cable which goes from the base of the shifter handle/mechanism up into the steering column.
It seems obvious that when the dealer installed a new ignition switch tumble back in 2011, they did not properly lock it into position at the base of the shifter mechanism.
The independent shop corrected the situation and all is now well.
I am going to try to get reimbursed by the dealer for what the independent shop charged me since the dealer had not done a proper job back in 2011. Will see what happens.
