2001 V70 - Another ETM/MAF possible issue

Post by truverman »

Alright here is the skinny...

My mother-in-law owns a 2001 V70 that she has really never been able to drive, she purchased the car with 80k miles on it and it sits at 81k miles.

The car randomly goes in what i understand to be "limp mode" with no lights or codes thrown, then with no rhyme or reason it snaps back out of it. I searched and searched and found no one person with exactly the same issue as this car, only similar ETM/MAF issues. The only reasonable explanation seemed to be a possible ETM issue, however the car does not have any of the other symptoms. So i went ahead and cleaned the ETM anyway, the issue persists.

What i know;

I purchased a VIDA/DICE setup to monitor the cars sensors, when the issue happens I notice the accelerator position reads properly, however; the throttle position remained at 30 degrees.

I did the xemodex flow chart (unplugged fuse for etm) and it performed as expected (6 second whine)

to test the MAF i disconnected it and the car began to surge, and run horrible.... so back to the ETM????

Side note, i have noticed once or twice odd power skips around shift points when under full throttle.

Someone please tell me what to test next, i do not want to purchase an ETM for no reason. thank you in advance for any help.

Is this a non-turbo? I would completely remove the MAF and give it a good cleaning with appropriate spray and let it dry completely before returning. Check for weird crap in your air filter box. And if it's a non-turbo the throttle body is very accessible for cleaning. get a new gasket and a brass brush. are there any codes?

I am not as experienced as many on this forum, and I can assure you I have tried many different solutions to several problems, and so far, a good wiggle, cleaning and other simple measures have solved what seemed like major problems.

MAF reading could be a tad higher at 14kg/hr at idle.

Delphi make a MAF sensor with a 6 sided torx adapter thrown in....AF10161 The Bosch number is 0280 218 108. Check on Amazon.com for both options.
In and out of limp mode with no codes? Well it isn't limp mode because it would store something unless you're not reading it right. Usually it takes 3 starts without the error to come out of limp.

People incorrectly read throttle opening with the engine not running as the throttle flap will sit still without any movement at all from pedal actuation after the 6-8 second ignition on phase. Measure throttle opening with engine running or perform an ETM test in Actuations if you have post 2006 software.

under what heading is the ETM test program?

to give you an idea, when i say the thrttle sat at 30 deg and the accelerator was to the floor, i was leaving a stop sign while a buddy was looking at VIDA. it randomly will act up and then randomly snap out of it.

As below. In Vehicle Communication-Advanced tab -choose ETM module of course.

Check the connector on the throttle and replug to help wipe off corrosion. Do the same with ETM connector and finally remove ECM and clean contacts with contact cleaner
