2000 XCV70 Timing Is Off

Post by DatSpool »

I was putting on the timing belt, I made sure my exhaust cam was lined up, and my intake cam was lined up, and I already knew the crank was lined up. So I installed the belt, and turned the engine by hand. I went to turn it counter clockwise and the tensioner clicked a few times, So I turned it clockwise a full revolution. By the time my intake cam had reached its mark, the exhaust cam was off about 60 degrees. I took the belt off, and got a pry-bar on the exhaust cam and tried turning it clockwise to make the marks line up. It turns about 30 degrees with ease then stops dead in its tracks, then springs back to the original location. How do I get my exhaust cam back to where its supposed to be?

It is going to be tricky.

If you can rock the crankshaft a bit and then the camshafts a bit and walk the crankshaft back to the timing mark then you can spin the cams 360 degrees without interference and get the timing back to zero. I'm not going to kid you, this is going to be tough and there will be some going back and forth to get there.

Don't force things.

Once you get the crank and cams lined up you will need to set the CVVT preload to get the final timing set. You are using the timing marks at 12:00 aren't you? The tutorials for the older engines have the camshaft timing marks at around 10:00 and 2:00, that is not applicable for your 2000 model.

Once you get the crankshaft mark back post back and we can help you with the preload procedure, it is pretty easy.
