1999 S70 No start after installing new Ignition Tumbler

Post by ashlee2319 »

Please help.

1999 s70 non-turbo.
I just swapped out my old ignition tumbler for one i picked up at junkyard. Came with key. Everything went smoothly except for the last damn shear bolt.

I go to start it up. Turns over- then Dies! Along with a few instrument panel lights that show up.

What could be wrong? I even tested my old ignition key ring and same thing happened.

The chip in the key is wrong for the car. If you do some surgery on the keys to swap the chip from your old key to the replacement key you can probably make it work. Details on the chip swap are in this thread:

Pay close attention to the numbering on the key itself so that you get the orientation correct before it goes under the knife.

Is this the only way to do this or is the dealer able to program the key?

If you have the VIN from the donor car you can get the dealership to cut you new keys and then do a software download to mate the key(s) to the car. The dealership has no way of reading the embedded code number from an existing key so from a programming standpoint the donor car key is essentially useless.

The price of a pair of keys is typically around $200.00 with the software download.

One other option is to get unchipped keys cut and then extract the chip from original key that was in your car and tape the chip to the antenna ring. You can get unchipped keys relatively cheap - around $20.00 a copy.

The real problem you are going to have is that the door keys and the ignition key will be two different keys and both will be chipped. You can't have two chipped keys in the car at the same time or the immobilizer will get confused.

I will go ahead and perform the surgery. Doesn't seem too hard.
For the door key, can't i just remove the chip? So it doesn't interfere with ignition key.
Or, might be able to grab the door lock cylinder from the junkyard so im using only one key.

To your earlier question, yes. You can just remove the door key chip since it isn't necessary to lock or unlock any of the doors. I'm guessing that the door key will wind up being the old ignition key and that is the one you want to use as the donor chip to the replaced key for the ignition cylinder.

The chip from the salvage ignition cylinder key should be tossed since it has no value.
